Welcome to the Computer Vision Research Group at the University of Western Ontario.
Our group has a strong history in low-level image analysis problems such as optical flow, stereo, segmentation and tracking. More recently we've tackled problems in multi-view reconstruction, real-time robot vision, Markov Random Field optimization, and much more. To find out more about ongoing research, browse through the interests of the people involved.
Our students and faculty have access to state of the art computing facilities such as Sharcnet and new hardware and labs built specifically for computer vision research. Throughout much of the year we hold seminars to discuss recent developments in computer vision (pizza lunch + video lecture or presentation by one of our members/guests). Vision group members can read more about resources in the main vision lab, located in the Western Science building.

- December 16, 2013. Meng Tang defended his MSC thesis " Color Separation for Image Segmentation." His advisor was Yuri Boykov.
- December 9, 2013. Igor Milevskiy defended his MSC thesis "Detecting Multilingual Lines of Text with Fusion Moves." His advisor was Yuri Boykov.
- September 1, 2013. The vision group has two papers accepted to ICCV 2013: Partial Enumeration and Curvature Regularization, and Grabcut in One Cut.
- May 1, 2013. The vision group has three papers accepted to CVPR 2013: Fast Trust Region for Segmentation, In Defence of 3D-label Stereo, Auxiliary Cuts for General Classes of Higher Order Functionals.
- December, 2012. Wei Li and Junwei Sun defended their MSc theses. Their theses titles were, respectively, "Automatic Foreground Initialization for Foreground Segmentation" and "Automatic Classification of Epilepsy Lesions". Their advisor was Olga Veksler.
- Sep 1, 2012. The vision group has one paper accepted to NIPS 2012: Minimizing Sparse High-Order Energies by Submodular Vertex-Cover.
- June 1, 2012. Andrew Delong has won an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship. This year, there were 1254 applicants and only 98 fellowships were awarded. The Postdoctoral Fellowships Program provides support to a core of the most promising researchers at a pivotal time in their careers. The fellowships are also intended to secure a supply of highly qualified Canadians with leading edge scientific and research skills for Canadian industry, government and universities.
- May 22, 2012. Professor Xue-Cheng Tai (University of Bergen, Norway) will give a talk "A Fast Algorithm for Euler's Elastica Model using Augmented Lagrangian Method." (details in calendar).
- Apr 23, 2012. Andrew Delong has received the Doctoral Dissertation Award 2011 from the Canadian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society (CIPPRS). The award will be handed in at the next Computer and Robot Vision (CRV) conference in Toronto, May 2012. Each year one such award is issued in Canada.
- Apr 3, 2012. Olga Veksler has been awarded an NSERC Accelerator grant—significant supplemental funding that is intended to maximize the impact of superior research programs.
- Nov 8, 2011. Yuri Boykov and Olga Veksler received a rare Test of Time Award at ICCV 2011 in recognition of their influential 1999 work "Fast Approximate Energy Minimization via Graph Cuts."
- Oct 21, 2011. June (Yu) Liu defended her PhD thesis "A Problem in Graphics and Vision via Graph-Cut based Energy Optimization." Her advisor was Olga Veksler.
- Oct 21, 2011. Professor James Elder (York University) will give a colloquium "On Grouping and Formlets: The Role of Shape in Perceptual Organization" (details in calendar).
- Sep 15, 2011. Professor Brendan Frey (University of Toronto) will give a colloquium, provocatively titled "Do We Learn to See Using Energy Minimization Or Statistical Inference?" (details in calendar).
- Sep 15, 2011. Andrew Delong successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled "Advances in Graph Cut Optimization." His advisor was Yuri Boykov.
